Oh, you’re from New York? Not so shocking in the city of Charlotte.
Last month, we surveyed our newsletter audience to find out where they lived before moving here. Just under 3,000 people answered this question — and the results were eye-opening.
The big one: Charlotteans come from so many different places. At the bottom of this story, I’ve put a list of cities that got one response (I may have missed some).
The most popular cities racked up about 5 percent of responses.
Here are the top 10.
(1) Raleigh
The state’s capitol used to be home for about 5 percent of survey respondents. Perhaps they took the train down.

(1) Charlotte (tied)
Charlotte natives — you’re far from the unicorns you think you are. About 5 percent of survey respondents said they’re originally from here, an exactly equal number as the people from Raleigh.

No surprise that the country’s largest city had one of the biggest ex-pat communities in Charlotte, at 4.7 percent.
