Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Charlotte has a weekend full of events commemorating his memory.
You can get more information on most of these events on the city’s website here. Note: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed Monday, along with the library system and post offices.
Saturday, January 13: MLK Parade. This annual event runs from 10 a.m. to noon and features more than 100 floats, marching bands, dance groups and community organizations. The route runs down Tryon Street from 9th Street to Stonewall Street. Details.

Saturday, January 13: Martin Luther King Jr. Call to Service. Immediately following the parade, the Call to Service is a drop-in volunteer event with family-friendly projects benefiting the American Red Cross, public school literacy efforts, Baby Bundles, Promising Pages and the Love in Action Project. Four locations: Blythe Elementary, East Mecklenburg High, Piedmont Open IB Middle School or Renaissance West STEAM Academy. Sign up here.
Saturday, January 13: Martin Luther King Jr. P.E.A.C.E. Basketball Showcase. Eight Carolinas high schools will square off in basketball at Johnson C. Smith University. Games run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Sunday, January 14: Jazz Brunch at Three Spirits Brewing. A celebration of MLK’s legacy from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a special beer release, live music, a DJ and food. Details.

Monday, January 15: McCrorey YMCA MLK Holiday Breakfast. This is the 24th annual event at the Charlotte Convention Center, with keynote speaker Pamela R. Lue-Hing. The event begins at 8 a.m. and tickets are $45. Details.
Monday, January 15: A March for Justice: 50 Years Later. Beginning at 9:15 a.m., this march will run from the Charlotte Convention Center to Marshall Park.
Monday, January 15: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Wreath Laying. This immediately follows the march, at 9:45 a.m. at Marshall Park.

Monday, January 15: Martin Luther King Jr. National Observance. Music, dance and poetry about MLK’s theology and philosophy. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theater.
Monday, January 15: Music: Celebrating Charlotte’s Black Culture and the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beginning at 7 p.m., Friendship Missionary Baptist Church will host an evening of art, music and poetry. Headliners include three-time Grammy winner Bluz.
