The Market 42 high-rise apartment project is ready to shape the north side of Uptown

That’s about to change. In early 2018, a subsidiary of developer Lennar will begin work on a 384-foot high-rise and mid-rise apartment project called Market 42.

The buildings will be bordered by the light rail and 9th, 8th and College streets.

With 20,000 square feet of retail space going along with its 549 apartment units, the tower will add some much-needed height to North Tryon as well as a ton of new retail that’s badly needed on this part of North College Street.

A lot of people will say the mid-rise portion looks just like every other apartment building in Charlotte, and to an extent it does. However, there are plans for masonry and storefront glass materials on the light rail side, which will greatly add to the wonderful ground floor.

This project is a major step in thrusting the North Tryon corridor forward and adding some quality height to the skyline. There will be an entire amenity floor on the 33rd floor for the high-rise tenants. It is to note, the colors in most of these renderings are dated and dark and light grey and yellow will be the final colors.

There is also a cool courtyard sandwiched between the parking deck and tower and will be accessible to the public. The intent is to make it a cool pocket park like Paley Park in NYC, and if they pull it off, will be a really great space.

The retail spaces should draw considerable attention. The developer is hoping for a great breakfast spot close to 8th Street.

Demolition is set to start in early 2017 and full project construction is set to begin in August 2018 with a completion in late 2020 or early 2021. Stay tuned for more details as they come in.
