Grab some friends, a beer and an axe: Lumberjaxe opens this Saturday near Plaza Midwood

The region’s first axe-throwing business has become an overnight sensation.

Lumberjaxe, created by Scott and Ashley Gadd, first hit the streets with two pop-up throwing lanes in a 1966 Continental pickup earlier this year, frequenting spots like NoDa Company store.

While the truck hasn’t gone completely by the wayside, the Gadds are focusing on their new, 3,000 square foot space at 933 Louise Avenue.

This is the same building that houses Advent Coworking, Codescape and Catawba Brewing.

Last time we checked in, finishing touches were being put on the five lanes and it was on track for an early November opening.

Now, though, the space is complete.

Here’s what you need to know before you throw.

The hours:

Lumberjaxe is closed to throwers every Monday and Tuesday for league play, though spectators are welcome. So far, Ashleigh and Scott have seen around 40 players join their 8-week league.

They’ll close Wednesday before opening lanes to everyone Thursday and Friday, 1-10 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday, 1-8 p.m.

The cost:

The Gadds expect lanes to be full more often than not, and while walk-ins are welcome, they encourage online booking. In addition to hourly throwing ($20/hour/person), you can book parties ($40/person + deposit, 8-person minimum) and league play ($120 for 8 weeks of throwing).

The throwers:

All throwers must be over the age of 18 and wearing closed-toed shoes.

Per the website: “During both private parties and league play, customers will participate in matches consisting of three rounds of five axe throws per play. Each lane consists of two targets where two customers will compete in head-to-head competition. Each customer will throw one axe at a time starting on or behind the throwing line that is 14’ from the target.”

Never played? Coaches will be on-site to help first-timers learn to throw and better understand the game.

The drinks (yes, the drinks):

The bar will offer a selection of wine and local beer. While there won’t be food on-site, outside food is welcome (the Gadds recommend walking over to the food truck parked outside of Catawba).
