“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” wrote L.M. Montgomery in her Anne of Green Gables, forgetting to mention – or simply choosing to ignore – that while October is one of the most charming times of the year, with its changing leaves and dropping temperatures, it’s also the creepiest time of the year, with its creepy costumes, otherworldly creatures and scary stories.
If you’re a scare junkie that thinks Scarowinds is overrated, we’ve upped the ante and present to you five of the creepiest things to do before the month is over.
P.S. If anybody needs me after dark this month, you’ll find me wrapped in a blanket on the couch with the dog, binging romcoms and keeping the doors locked and blinds closed. Stay away from me, October.
Beyond the Grave Uptown Walking Tour
Your guide will lead through some of the most haunted spots in Uptown by lantern light, including medical institutions, Fourth Ward and more, on a 90-minute tour.

Boogerwoods
This haunted attraction, 40 minutes outside of Uptown, has been rated number one in the state by North Carolina Haunted Houses and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, so they’re on to something.
This year, you’ll find 14 scenes, including a meat packing room, surgery theatre and clown school, that may get you dirty or wet and incur motion sickness.

Paranormal Grounds Investigation
The grounds of Rosedale date back 200 years and their history includes tragic epidemics, greed and the Underground Railroad, which. Explore them with professional ghost hunters and attempt to contact the dead with technology from the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society.

Paranormal House Investigation
Explore the four floors of the Rosedale plantation house with no more than 7 other guests and members of the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society in an attempt to make contact with the spirits said to be bound to the plantation due to lives cut short by insanity, greed and sickness.

Queen City Ghost Tours
You’ll explore haunted cemeteries dating back to the Revolutionary and Civil wars, hear stories about a haunted civil war hospital and find that Fourth Ward may be creepier than you realized in this 75-minute tour.

When: October 4-31 at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m.

Bonus: Hike to Lost Cove
This abandoned mountain town in Yancey County will make you feel one of two things: Nostalgic, as it was home to a small community of people from the mid-1800s to the ’50s and many of their belongings are still there, or creeped out, as it’s been abandoned for over 55 years, and many of the resident’s belongings are still there.
Once you’ve reached it (doable by a 2.5-mile hike down Flattop Mountain, or a 5-mile trek down Devils Creek Trail), you’ll find old cars, standing buildings and, as the cherry on top, a graveyard.
