Bartender Larry Suggs joins the SouthBound team following a stint at The Punch Room at the Ritz-Carlton.

It’s a major change of pace moving from the refined, formal experience of the Ritz to a casual taco bar that begs for no-fuss beachy cocktails. And Suggs translates the theme effortlessly with an approachable menu featuring sangria and margaritas on tap, Mexican lagers, Tequila flights and gorgeous made-to-order cocktails in the $5-$15 range.

He’s also making his own triple sec and citrus salt in house and doing tons of fresh squeezed juices.

Here are some highlights…

Bartender Larry Suggs

SouthBound ‘Rita ($8)

The house margarita is served on tap and features Suggs’ own triple sec (made with leftover rinds from the juicer) and citrus salt.

El Bandtio ($12)

A refreshing (and visually pleasing) smokey pineapple cocktail made with Vida Mezcal, Jarritos pineapple soda and fresh lemon and orange.

Cerveza en Bolsa ($5)

A can of Tecate or Tecate Light served in a brown paper bag with a shot of sangrita (a non-alcoholic palate cleanser) and a salted lime. It’s a hands-on drinking experience — sip the beer and then pour in the sangrita to create a bubbling foam effect.

32oz Mexican Beers ($7-$10 each)

Carta Blanca, Corona Familiar and Tecate are available in hefty 32-ounce bottles, which can be ordered together for the table as the “Three Amigos” and delivered in a bucket of ice like a fancy champagne presentation except not at all.

Agave Flights ($18-$24)

Three options — Especial, Primero or Mezcal — all served with three sample shots.

I personally couldn’t be more excited for this addition to Charlotte’s social scene so I’ll most certainly see you there.
