The grounds of Quail Hollow almost look more like a construction zone than a country club right now.
Just inside the gate, crews are constructing the giant metal framework that will become a merchandise tent. Trucks roll in one after the other.
And soon, tens of thousands of patrons and media will walk through the doors.

It’s been seven years since the PGA announced that it would bring one of golf’s four major tournaments to Charlotte. In that time period, members of the city’s most exclusive country club have dealt with a host of inconveniences.

Most notable: The course was closed for three months as the club put in new greens and made major changes to several holes. The course got tougher, too. The average score has inched up more than four strokes this year, according to self-reported scorecards online.
“Our membership was very understanding,” Quail Hollow Club president Johnny Harris said Monday.
The payoff is almost here. The PGA Championship will begin August 10 and feature most of the world’s top golfers. The national media was in town Monday for a preview of the grounds and how the media operation would function.
“I’m excited about showing off our city and our state, and certainly about showing off this golf course,” Harris said. “We look forward to hosting the world.”
