In my Midwestern hometown, fish fries are events to plan around every Friday night during the Lenten period leading up to Easter. They’re also ubiquitous, so it’s easy to mix and match your favorite ones and explore new ones.
For the past couple of years, I’ve been on a fruitless search for easy-to-access options in Charlotte. The city isn’t completely devoid of fish fries, but they are nearly impossible to find, even after scouring websites and social media. (St. Matthew Catholic Church in Ballantyne is your best bet.)
Charlotte’s Catholic churches are missing a huge opportunity. Fish fries bring community members together and serve as a chance to introduce faith and the church to a larger audience.
Not to mention they’re delicious.
It’s time for more Catholic parishes to draw in the community by doing a better job marketing events outside of their current membership and for more parishes to consider expanding past only one fish fry during Lent.

If you’re on the hunt for a fish fry, I turned to my favorite online forum of moms and scrounged up a few options:
St. Matthew Catholic Church (8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway): Charlotte’s largest church hosts a weekly Knights of Columbus Lenten dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays during Lent in the Parish Center Family Room. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for children ages 4 to 12. (Credit cards are accepted.) Menu includes breaded and baked whitefish, as well as green beans, macaroni, coleslaw and dinner rolls.
St. Gabriel Catholic Church (3016 Providence Road): The church will hold a fish fry in the school cafeteria this Friday (3/10) from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Menu includes baked fish, fried fish, clam chowder, fries, macaroni and shrimp dip. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children age 10 and under. Pro tip: Get there early or prepare for long lines.
