A replacement for Uptown’s Main Library is in the works

That fresh start may be right around the corner. A request for qualifications has gone out from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library system requesting firms to submit information on design and construction services for a new Uptown library project, according to public documents.

The scope calls for a new library consisting of around 110,000 square feet (slightly smaller than the existing library).

To compare, Austin recently built a new 198,000-square-foot library for $120 million. Austin’s library is gorgeous, so I have high hopes and high expectations for this project.

A new library would be excellent for Uptown. It could jumpstart Spirit Square renovation and redevelopment projects. It will breathe life into the library and the surrounding area.
