The Women’s March on Charlotte will take to the streets on Saturday

The demonstration is part of a larger global solidarity movement spurred by the Women’s March on Washington.

So far, 281 marches are planned for cities in 36 countries with an expected global participation of nearly 600,000 people. Here in Charlotte, 4,400 people have expressed interest in the event on Facebook.

The marches are being coordinated as a direct response to Donald Trump’s forthcoming presidential inauguration, which will take place on Friday.

According to the march’s global mission and vision, the events will “send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights.”

The peaceful resistance, according to organizers, opposes “the rhetoric of the past election cycle [that] has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us.”

Local partners backing the Charlotte march include Carolinas Care, Girls Rock Charlotte, Lillian’s List, PFLAG Charlotte, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, Queen City Clinic Escorts and Stratajen.
