Popbar, a gelato pop shop with a global footprint, will open its first North Carolina location in NoDa later this year.
The shop is located at 3125 N. Davidson Street and will open on Wednesday, December 14.
It took owners Kia Lyons and her husband Clarence nine months to land the perfect lease in Charlotte’s cutthroat commercial real estate market, but in the end, it was all worth it.
“I couldn’t have picked a better location for us,” Kia said.

If you’re new to the brand, the Popbar concept is all about customization.
They’ll have 16 to 20 gelato, sorbetto (dairy-free) and yogurt pops on rotation daily. From there, customers can create their own flavor combinations with a selection of chocolate dips and toppings.
Kia’s favorite combination is a dulce de leche pop dipped in white chocolate and rolled in crumbled waffle cone pieces. Clarence likes the classic combination of a strawberry pop dipped in dark chocolate. They’ve also got a frozen hot chocolate on a stick that will be a big draw in the winter months.
Pops start at $3.49 + $0.50 each for unlimited dips and toppings.

I won’t pretend this is a health food, but Popbars are at least relatively healthy in the grand scheme of frozen desserts on the market.
Without toppings, they clock in at 69 to 198 calories per pop.
And if you have dietary restrictions, you’re in luck. All the pops and all the toppings except waffle cone are gluten free. All the sorbetto pops, dark chocolate dip and toppings are dairy-free.

Popbar NoDa’s shop hours aren’t set in stone yet, but they’re planning on a late-night operation that makes sense for the neighborhood.
Right now, Kia says the plan is to operate noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to midnight Thursday through Saturday and 1 – 8 p.m. on Sunday.
They may tweak those hours according to demand and traffic flow.

Still can’t picture it? Watch Popbar in action (and then try not to think about it all day)…
If you don’t live anywhere near NoDa, Kia says she’s got her eye on at least three more Charlotte locations. In the meantime, check out this video and try to tell me you’re not motivated to drive to NoDa to eat this.
