Watch out, Casper: Charlotte startup Staya Sleep is making itself known in the custom mattress-in-a-box industry

That was a problem; Durbin believed that a mattress, one of the most important items in a person’s life, should be able to be customized to fit both partners, regardless of different sleep needs and habits.

So, with a team of “sleep enthusiasts,” she created a line of custom-made mattresses called Staya Sleep.

Each mattress, a combination of special micro-coils (rather than traditional inner springs) and specialty foam, is made individually based on a customer’s needs and comes in at a price point far lower than what a customer would find in-store. In fact, that’s why Durbin keeps her business online – to cut costs of mattress storage, salaries and commissions.

Here’s how it works:

Customers can choose between a making a custom mattress and ordering a universal mattress (which is recommended for guests rooms and lovers of hotel mattresses). Don’t hesitate to customize – the price, which ranges from $699 to $999, won’t go up.

I went through the customization process, answering questions about sleep arrangements (by myself), the side I prefer (the right – yes, they’re customized by side), my height and weight (just over 5’11”, a lady doesn’t tell) before finally choosing my mattress preference (firm).

All in all, thanks to free shipping, my customized queen-sized mattress would run me $899 and last for 10 years.

The mattresses take a week to make and ship, and you’ll have it within 5-7 business days.

I don’t have a guest room – or the need or means for a new mattress right now – but I know where I’ll go when I do.
