South End’s Atherton Mill continues its transformation. See 8 renderings of what’s about to be built

We first reported on this a few months back. There’s going to be  60,000 square feet of retail, the hundreds of new apartments, the rail trail improvements and the adaptive reuse of the “Trolley Barn” and Parks-Cramer Mill building.

Here’s a quick recap.

Here’s what is staying:

• Trolley Barn (the Atherton Market)
• Parks-Cramer Mill (the building that has Free People, Anthropologie, Warby Parker, Savory Spice Shop, Sola Salon, Vin Master, Luna’s, O-Ku and Big Ben)
• Tremont Trolley Stop
• Atherton Lofts

Here’s what’s going away:

• Bonez
• Pure Fitness
• Yadkin Bank
• Halloween store (formerly By-Design)

Here’s what is coming in:

• 5 story apartment building and a ton of new apartments
• Parking deck
• 60,000 square feet of additional retail
• Immense rail trail improvements

The design on these is much better that most (the all white images are not the final product, the brick is) and it was just given sign off by the Historic Landmarks Commission’s Design Review Committee. The Historic Landmarks Commission full approval date is set for November 14.

What this project amounts to is a massive overhaul of an underutilized area with potential to be something spectacular and developer/owner EDENS plans to make it just that: spectacular.

The total project will have over 100,000 square feet of retail (including existing shops) and there is already a stellar baseline to work off of. What is important to note is the excellent rail trail improvements. There will be a path that will connect Publix, through this project and out to Tremont. No more navigating through the left over trolly tracks.

The plaza space is beautiful and will take into account the DNA of the surrounding historical buildings.

Just a little update for you all but it is important to clear some things up and to keep eyes on this incredible project.
