Summer may be winding down but the frozen dessert of the season just hit Charlotte.
About a week ago, Ninety’s Ice Cream in University debuted its line of monster macaron ice cream sandwiches much to the delight of dessert fusion enthusiasts everywhere.
Move over cronuts, there’s a new combo treat in town.

A macaron ice cream sandwich is precisely what you think it is.
We’re talking thick, rich ice cream sandwiched between two delicate French meringue-based wafers.

I was first introduced to macaron ice cream sandwiches at Lucette Grace in Raleigh where they’re a seasonal summer-only item produced one flavor at a time in small, limited-edition batches.
Now first on the scene in Charlotte, Ninety’s is cranking out dozens of unique flavors and they don’t plan on slowing down any time soon.
You’ll find flavors like birthday cake, cinnamon chai, Fruity Pebbles, red velvet, Oreo and strawberry.
Although they’re only about two weeks into sales, they say s’mores has pulled ahead a clear crowd favorite.

Not familiar with Ninety’s Ice Cream & Sandwiches?
It’s a family-run operation with more than a 30-year history at The Boardwalk in University. Srey Ngear has owned the shop with her family since 2004 and she says the macaron ice cream sandwiches were her son Darith’s idea.

Srey, who is known to both customers and her family alike as “Mom”, says she’s very proud of Darith’s creation and is excited to see where it goes.
To her credit, Srey is responsible for rolling out a full sandwich menu at the ice cream shop that has become a popular staple, as well.

Feeling a strong itch to email me a spelling correction? Wait! You’re correct that there is a coconut-based cookie called a macaroon (two o’s), but that’s not what we’re talking about here. The French spelling of macaron is correct here.
