Are you bummed out from last week’s news about the closing of Amos’ Southend in March 2017? It certainly seems that Charlotte has lost much of its music history in recent years, with Tremont Music Hall, the Double Door Inn, and Amos’ all on the way out in the span of a year.
With so many beloved local music halls on their way out, it can seem like Charlotte’s live music history is destined to fade.

An upcoming exhibit at the Charlotte Museum of History seeks to preserve that history and bring alive the glory days of Charlotte’s fading music venues through a new permanent exhibit that will focus on Charlotte’s iconic music venues.

The exhibit opens this Thursday, August 25, with a lecture and illustrated presentation of Charlotte’s music venues given by author and photographer Daniel Coston.
His photographs of these venues over the years include concerts and musical acts whose performances contributed to the mystique and prominence of locations like The Visulite Theatre, Tremont Music Hall, Double Door Inn and The Milestone.
In addition to these local music venues, throughout his career, Daniel Coston has photographed music icons like Johnny Cash, the Avett Brothers and hundreds more of the biggest names in music. The lecture is free to the public and a reception will follow the presentation.

The permanent exhibit is curated by museum historian Gregory Gann, and explores the Charlotte music scene through the local venues that hosted local, regional and national acts. Changes in musical genres and the way the public accesses music has led to the decline of the live music scene.
