Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church has been a full city block-sized staple of East Boulevard since 1954.

The cathedral and courtyard areas have been undergoing heavy construction in an effort to renovate them and bring them up to today’s standards.

Additions to the cathedral — which were paid for by donations from the congregation — include an elevator, redesigned wheelchair ramp, basement renovations and general expansion.
The church is also installing an entirely new courtyard area that includes new pavement, lighting, benches, flagpoles and a covered walkway connecting the cathedral with both the community center and parking lot.
In order to make these plans a reality, there were some strict design rules to adhere to.
They needed to respect the original character while being easily distinguishable.

There were rules when it came to keeping up with Dilworth’s appearances as well, including that the inspiration for design should be found there, that materials need to be historically appropriate and that walkways visible to passersby need to follow the designs of the other sidewalks in the area.
Final plans were approved in July, and construction started soon thereafter. Take a peek at what it will look like when it’s done:

The construction has stayed on schedule which means that it won’t affect the annual Yiasou Festival, planned for September 8-12. Go forth and get your baklava sundaes.
The first phase of construction is the courtyard, which is where most of the festival takes place, and is on track to be done as soon as August 15, church officials said. The cathedral work, including renovations to the basement, classrooms and an expansion of the church itself is expected to be done around Christmas or in early 2017.
