Soul singer and Charlotte native Anthony Hamilton cut hair at Mangum’s off West Boulevard before he gained international acclaim for his hit songs and smooth vocals. Back then, he was known as the “singing” barber, shaping sound and style for his clients and sending them on their way.
He’s quoted as saying,
“Being a barber is about taking care of the people.”
Hamilton’s wisdom rings true. Behind every well-groomed man is a barber that knows their craft and works at the service of their community.
The environment of the barbershop is one of preparation and community, serving, for decades, as a meeting place for manhood from the very first haircut to following the style of one’s favorite R&B singer to landing the interview for a new job.
We spoke with a few young and stylish Charlotte professionals on where they go to stay a cut above the rest.

About the experience: “I’ve been going there since 2011. They are extremely professional and are very serious about their crafts. Every week I go I feel like I’m in the “Barbershop” movie. The environment is really like a “black man’s country club.” Not only can you expect to get a sharp haircut but also engage in topics ranging from politics, sports, and anything trending on black Twitter. My barber Ivan has cut my hair for my college graduation, job interviews, and soon my wedding.”
