For decades, you’ve had to drive out of town to get to a beach. But that’s all about to change with the addition of Mecklenburg County’s first public beach at Ramsey Creek Park.
In 2008, voters approved over $425,000 worth of bond money to make it happen.
Construction started in 2015 and the end result is a fenced half-acre worth of beach that leads down into a 4-foot deep swimming area of the same size.
The beach opens this weekend and can hold up to 500 people, but make sure to carpool – there are less than 130 parking spaces.
Officials attempted to redirect boaters to the Blythe Landing Park in Huntersville in order to free up parking at Ramsey Creek’s boat landing, but the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission turned this idea down.
Entrance to the beach is $3 per car for residents of the county, $5 per car for non-residents. There’s also a season pass option that’ll run you $52 if you’re a resident and $77 if you’re not.
Prices also differ for senior citizens and those with disabilities. Senior citizens of the county will pay $2 per car while non-citizens will pay $3. Season passes run $32 for seniors and people with disabilities that are county citizens and $40 for those who aren’t.
The beach will be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and lifeguards will be on duty from dawn until dusk.
