At a show with a sparse crowd Sunday night, my buddy Ryan said, “I don’t think this town is ready for music they don’t know.” He’s onto something. If it’s not that, it’s that Charlotte seems to be a Thursday-Saturday music crowd, heavy on Friday/Saturday. More likely, it’s a mix of both. Yes, things can go late, but there is plenty of great music at plenty of great venues before 10 or 11 p.m. during the week or on Sunday. As for “music they don’t know,” there is this wonderful thing called the Internet. And there’s YouTube. And Spotify. Apple Music. Pandora. Outside of that, it’s okay to see something you’ve never heard before. In fact, oftentimes the most surprising nights are the best. Carry on.

Times listed are when the show is scheduled to start, not when the doors are opened. Unless listed otherwise, prices are before taxes and fees.

Agenda Picks

  • 5/19: Samantha Fish, U.S. National Whitewater Center, 7 p.m., free. Fish plays some very rowdy blues, has a killer voice and likes to rip on her cigar box guitar. Should be a super fun night at the best setting for music in the area.
  • 5/21: People’s Blues of Richmond, Moose Kick, Dank; Visulite Theatre, 9 p.m., $10 (tickets). Love People’s Blues of Richmond and their high-energy, blues-driven, psychedelic rock and roll. Tim Beavers II is a rare frontman who has so much pain and passion in his vocals that the crowd should truly believe the words that come out of his mouth. This one should not be missed.
