University City finally has a great breakfast option, Famous Toastery

Maybe it’s the former college student in me, but I can eat breakfast at all times of the day. There is just something about light, fluffy pancakes swimming in rich, warm maple syrup… I live for grits, toast, a fresh bowl of fruit and anything associated with an egg.
I love breakfast, but I was beginning to think that the University area didn’t agree. For the past few years, the options for a restaurant that focuses on serving a killer breakfast have been few. Enter local chain Famous Toastery. I went in to the new University location for myself, and this is what I learned.
They open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and they sell breakfast and lunch all day. All of their food is made to order, in house, and it comes out pretty quickly.

Every server is your server. The owner told me that they follow this method as a means to ensure that every customer can be taken care of by anyone in the restaurant. They split tips at the end of the day, so the staff works together as a team. While it can be a bit annoying for people to keep asking if you want more coffee, they have created a system of communication to make sure they don’t overwhelm the customer.

The location is perfect. It’s located in one of University area’s most popular spots, the boardwalk. That view is a great way to start the day.

The food was okay (pricey). I ordered a pancake combo that only featured one pancake, one egg and a couple of pieces of turkey bacon. By the time I added on a side of potatoes and a coffee, I spent close to $20. Everyone has his or her comfort level where price is concerned, but if I spend $20 on breakfast, it needs to be phenomenal.
The atmosphere is fun. I could tell that the owner wants the staff to enjoy their jobs. For marketing purposes, they had one of their employees dress up in a giant toast suit and encourage potential customers to stop by. I like that they have fun with their brand.
Famous Toastery has successfully turned the old Bad Dog’s bar into a picturesque, fun spot to catch breakfast or lunch the entire time that they are open.
Maybe other potential breakfast restaurants will take notice and head to our part of town. And if we are extremely lucky, maybe one of them will choose to stay open past curfew, and we can finally get the late night diner we have so desperately been craving.
