6 projects just got funding to keep South End interesting. Here they are

Earlier this year, Historic South End announced that they’d be giving out grants this year to people with ideas on how to enhance the neighborhood’s vibe and keep it interesting. People could get up to $1,000 for “placemaking” projects — a good example is the “Before I Die” chalkboard (seen above).

The first six recipients of the microgrants have been announced. Here’s what they have planned.
Coloring book wall
Called “Make Your Mark,” this project will let people who walk by color in the lines.

Local photography exhibit
Pics “capturing the neighborhood essence” will be temporarily on display outdoors. The people behind this are high-powered artists from the Charlotte Art League.

Pop-up projection art
Look out for where these will show up. The idea is to shine up some art in “underutilized” places.

“Runner’s Respite”
This will be an interactive bench with lighting and games.

Community “Make Day”
This will open up a makerspace — think computer controlled tools — to South End. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is helping out with this.
Free dog training classes
Self-explanatory.
No word on when these projects will actually happen. You can get more information on the recipients here. The second round of applications opens in mid-June.
