Crown Station Coffee House & Pub opened its doors in 2011 with the goal of trying to, in the words of owner Mike Dawson, “revitalize Elizabeth Avenue. And it worked.”

The popular Elizabeth spot saw everything from live comedy and music to open mic nights to monthly underground house music DJs with live hardware.

It also became known for its coffee and coffee-inspired cocktails.

But after five years, G&K Enterprises (the owner of the building) has filed for bankruptcy protection and is selling.
Central Piedmont Community College bought the building which leaves the current tenants, like Dawson, scrambling for a new location. “CPCC will keep this building, but that’s as much as we know,” said manager Celia Thompson. Dawson calls the landlord’s actions “disheartening.”

Both Dawson and Thompson agree that the past five years have been great and the people and regulars that made up the crowd were the best part.
“It’s hard,” Thompson said. “It’s bittersweet.”
For Dawson, the best part is that Crown Station “has given [him] so much. Everything we’ve given, the community gave so much back.”

Where to next? That’s up in the air, though Dawson wants Charlotte to keep an eye out. “You never know where you’ll find us.”
