Best segments on Charlotte morning radio shows, ranked

(1) Can’t Beat LauRen on Kiss 95.1

I am not a celebrity news person, but even I’m getting pretty good at answering these questions. I tune in every morning at approximately 7:37 a.m. on Kiss 95.1 to try my hand at the five questions. Pro tip: The answers are generally Blake Shelton, Rihanna or Harry Styles.

I wish the questions were a little harder sometimes. I also wish that the tie didn’t go to the house, but I reckon you can’t keep giving away Newk’s gift cards for 5-5 ties every other day.

(2) Phone Check on Power 98

Love the Clairissa Jenkins character on Power 98. Love hearing the pranked people get all worked up. Love the little comments she makes. This is at 7:50 a.m. after a nice little segue. I know this is syndicated but I don’t care.

(3) Rock and Roll Trivia on Rock 92

Yes, Rock 92 is a Triad station but you can get it most everywhere in Charlotte and our city has tons of people try to beat Christopher Merriweather Demm from 2 Guys Named Chris in 10 questions on music and rock and roll trivia. I actually made it on one time and got smoked. Generally on in the 8 o’clock hour. If only it were on earlier in the morning.

(4) Theme music during the Morning Madhouse on Power 98

I’m a huge No Limit Larry fan and the Morning Madhouse is super well produced. Love the song that comes on around 8 a.m. “WAKE UP! Hit them boys in the head, it’s the Morning Madhouse.” Also love the song that goes “Rockin’ with No Leezy… something something 704 that’s my city.”

(5) Local segments during Morning Edition on WFAE

Love a blast of local radio news every half hour or so. Marshall Terry and on weekends Duncan McFadyen do a bang-up job.

(6) Confession Wednesdays on Kiss 95.1

If you get on the air you get entered to win something. This is also around 7:50 a.m. each week. Some of the confessions are bad but some are incredible.

(7) Roll Call on Power 98

Getting people’s names on the radio is simple and effective.

(8) High-low jackpot on 96.9 The Kat

Basically you try to guess how much money is in the pot, down to the cent. Hard to follow unless you’re an avid listener but I love the specificity of the guesses. One time the pot was $918.32.

(9) War of the Roses on Kiss 95.1

Yeah, I know these are staged but they’re entertaining, OK? I mean, who spills their dirty secrets to some random person who calls you? Also shouldn’t people have caught on that “Flowers For You” isn’t a real company?

(10) Chat Room on The Bob and Sheri Show (107.9)

Usually good questions. Love the format. Cool to have a national show here in town.
