As we have all heard before, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” And that is surely the case for the Old Westinghouse building at 2001 West Morehead Street. It sits atop a small hill, next door to WBTV, and has one of the best views of Bank of America Stadium and Uptown Charlotte.
This older building, which once was a distribution center for electrical products, was repurposed as a potato chip plant about 15 years ago. The building itself holds a lot of history and even some secrets, but one of the best kept secrets is the Potato Sack. The Potato Sack is cross between a flea market, designer showroom and a pop-up shop… let’s just say it’s a special place.
This semi-secret showroom pops up every other month or so, and those in the know flood the building for three short days of shopping wonder.

The Potato Sack itself was the brain child of two dear friends Nell and Martha. It all started with the idea of a few friends who had collected too many treasures for their own homes and needed to make room.
A garage sale could work, yes — but if a normal garage sale would work for a friend or two, let’s invite more friends to join and do it with more flair.

As more friends heard about it, this hobby has grown organically into a friend sharing bonanza. The potato chip building on Morehead had extra space, and the Potato Sack was born.

The building itself houses over 40 spaces, where a mix of aspiring designers and budding artisans share their wares, both leftover treasures and new creations. Every event hosts a different and ever-changing inventory, so each visit is a new adventure.

Just remember that smell you might catch wafting from the building might not only be potato chips, it could be the sweet smell of deals.
The next event is March 17-19. Make sure to follow them on their Facebook page.
