The small town of Cornelius (population 26,000) straddles I-77 just 30 minutes north of Charlotte. To the east is a traditional Main Street district and to the west is Lake Norman. It’s one of my favorite places to go to get out of Charlotte because it’s close but feels far away. And there’s a lot to explore there, from antique shops and boutiques to breweries and bakeries.

Unfortunately, this round up comes with a disclaimer: It barely scratches the surface of all there is to see, do and eat in Cornelius. I got a flat tire and had to cut my day short. So before you send me a list of the hundred places I missed, just know that I know. But don’t worry, Cornelius. I’ll be back.
This is a perfect place to visit on the weekend when you’ve got time to wander around aimlessly. Just check your tires first.
