More than 1,000 apartments are under construction within a quarter mile of the intersection of Central Avenue and Lamar Avenue.
“As the neighborhood continues to grow, people living there are going to need more retail options,” said Jon Dixon, who bought the property at that intersection last year. And his group is going to turn it into a neighborhood services hub that will be a gathering place for the community.

His complex covers 20,000 square feet across four buildings. Fu Man Chu Cupcakes has been there for a long time. They’ll be joined by a boutique nail salon, which has already signed a lease. They’re also in talks with a beer shop, and there’s the possibility of event space on the interior of the property.
“We want to attract vibrant, local retail tenants that will be an amenity to the neighborhood and preserve the character of Plaza Midwood,” Dixon said.
The current owners bought the land in April from a company that was using it primarily as warehouse space. You’ll still see the loading docks used by the industrial tenants.

The retail tenants will join the former Joe Hooper’s Neighborhood Pub on the front of the complex. The new owners will re-open this spring as a new restaurant concept — with an announcement coming soon.
This location is going to kill it. There is already the massive Metro 808 community right across Lamar from Central Crossing.
Across Central, there’s the CampusWorks development that’s going to horseshoe around the Thirsty Beaver. There’s also the TriBridge project right at Central and Clement. They’re all going to want a place to hang out, and this is an obvious choice.
