Candy Girl Confections: Charlotte’s one-stop shop for doughnut leggings, emoji socks and other unique gifts

Because nothing says “I live a healthy, balanced lifestyle and am on the way to the gym right now” like spandex covered in fried dough.

I found this gem of a fashion statement at Candy Girl Confections, a bright, quirky little shop on Selwyn Avenue.

I’d always noticed Candy Girl (it’s a little hard to miss with its bright yellow facade and bubblegum pink window panes) but didn’t make my first visit until a few weeks ago after receiving one of their new Gifts Like Sugar boxes as a thank you.

My box came personalized with my name and items that matched the most readily available information you can find about me online: I like cats. There were cat socks and a cat candy bar along with toasted coconut toffee, a chocolate-covered branded rice crispy treat and a Charlotte bubblegum mug.

I mistakenly assumed Candy Girl was just for kids and just full of candy. Turns out they have all kinds of kid-at-heart adult-friendly gifts: like the Charlotte bubblegum mug, emoji socks and a ‘DAMN GOOD COFEE’ tumbler.

If you’re overwhelmed by the selection (and it is pretty overwhelming), you can bypass the store altogether and shop the Gifts Like Sugar boxes online.

They have pre-packed options for guys, girls, holidays, etc. or you can work with owner Adria Roberson to create a unique customized box like the one I got. (Boxes range from $50 – $120 and the ones on the higher end include a sweatshirt.)

Roberson, who took a dramatic detour into the whimsical world of candy gifting after a decade-long stint on Wall Street, hopes the boxes will become an easy go-to gift option that alleviate the pressure on the giver but still offer a thoughtful, personalized gift for the recipient.
