Goodwill’s holiday concept shop GW looks like something straight out of Anthropologie (minus the huge rip off)

I love thrift shopping. In fact, today marks the start of month 12 of my yearlong challenge to buy no new clothes in 2015. The experiment has taught me things about material excess and personal style and leading with who you are before what you wear, but it honestly hasn’t been that challenging. That’s because I like saving money and I love the thrill of the hunt when it comes to buying used clothes. There are also tons of places to shop recycled clothing in Charlotte.
But not everyone is like me and so for people who aren’t keen on rummaging through disorganized racks in search of the one suitable item you need to wear, there’s Goodwill’s new holiday pop-up shop GW at the EpiCentre.

GW features a curated collection of donated men’s and women’s apparel, accessories and housewares merchandised in eye-pleasing easy-to-shop color blocked displays reminiscent of something you’d see in Anthropologie. The best part? Goodwill prices on Anthro-style goods.

I saw an Athleta dress in perfect condition that retails $98 being sold for $4. I got a gold sunburst mirror (you know the ones you see in home magazines for hundreds of dollars?) for $20. There were Prada shoes and Coach purses and brand new Ralph Lauren items with tags still in tact.

What’s cool about this merchandise is that it’s all from the same donated supply that ends up in Charlotte-area Goodwill stores, but it’s just easier to find here where the cream of the crop is all in one place. Also of note, the entire GW store was designed by current Goodwill employees. It looks so good they got questions about whether or not the floor plan and retail merchandising was outsourced to another team.

Goodwill is testing the GW concept in the Uptown market with the hope of reaching a younger millennial audience that thinks Goodwill isn’t the right place to find higher end thrift clothes. The goal is to prove them wrong with the collection at GW. If the temporary shop is successful (and it already has been), they will aim to roll it out again in mid-2016.
As with every Goodwill store, GW supports the organization’s bigger mission of providing job training and employment services free of charge to people in our community.
You’ll find GW on the second floor of the EpiCentre. Just look for the #werkinprogress doors or the jolly old elf they’re calling Hipster Santa.
The store will be open through Sunday, December 6 with extended shopping hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
