Bread. We’re long past the days of just settling for the pre-cut loaf of white stuff from the grocery. Yessiree. The deftness of the modern baker has improved tenfold and settling for subpar carbs is grounds for ending a friendship/relationship these days. As we further ourselves into the carb-loaded months of fall and winter, we should all take a moment and think: Where can I score a sweet loaf in the Queen City?

Thus, here’s a list of five bakeries baking five loaves of bread that are always a beacon of hope when I don’t want to bake a loaf of my own. Here they are:

Local Loaf Bakery (7 St Public Market)

Bread: Brioche

If you’ve ever walked through the front entrance of 7 Street, you’ve seen Adam Spears and his team slinging all types of dough into incredibly gorgeous loaves. Next time you’re having a cookout or just want something amazing for a burger or dog, go buy Adam’s brioche buns. Helllllooooo, heaven (and butter).

Sunflour Baking Company (Elizabeth)

Bread: Sourdough

The loaves here are leavened with a natural sourdough starter and have an incredible punch of sour flavor. Perfect balance for a sandwich or toast in the morning. Grab a loaf. Or seven. Bonus: Throw caution to the wind and buy all of the Whoopie Pies they have.

Suarez Bakery (Park Road Shopping Center)

Bread: Cuban Bread

Crusty, crackly, soft, and chewy. If you’ve yet to experience a loaf of Cuban bread proper, your carb-centric life is not yet complete. Bring a loaf home for a Cuban sandwich, throw hunks of in Portugese Bread Soup, and watch the crumbs gracefully adorn your shirt/beard/seat in your car.

Renaissance Patisserie (Sedgefield)

Bread: Classic Baguette

A classic baguette is something of magic. To slice one lengthwise and see all of those pockets fit for cheese, soup, butter, cheese, or cheese is pure bliss. Do you and your kin a favor and buy a jar of their tomato soup when you stop in.

Dunk it in your soups, slather it with salted Irish butter, or just tear off a hunk as a snack. Bread always kicks butt when it’s done right. Hats off to these fine Charlotte breadfriends.
