What we pay our educators has been a huge debate in North Carolina. Teacher pay remains near the bottom nationally (No. 47 in 2013-14). Turnover rates are at a five-year high.
Things are obviously a bit different for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools top administrators. But even in the central office, the district has begun to take a look at salaries. I’ve heard from the school board that people like budget officers or IT technicians or what have you can even look to different floors in the Government Center and see people with comparable jobs making more money.
This is the third and final installment in our local government salary series. Take a look at city salaries here, and county salaries here.
In its salary database, CMS reported actual earnings in 2014, so these won’t reflect new hires in 2015 or job title/salary changes since then.
Overall, you’ll find that top salaries tend to be lower in CMS than at the city or county. That’s been a sticking point for the system, who are quick to tell you that CMS has 18,000+ employees while the city has about 7,000.
But you’ll also notice as you go through this list the sheer amount of turnover, even at this high level.
