Hispanic Heritage Month, a time of national recognition of Hispanic culture, kicks off today and runs through October 15. With its surging Hispanic population, Charlotte is ripe for celebration.

According to Charlotte’s Latin American Coalition, North Carolina is a new immigrant gateway with the fastest-growing foreign-born population in the country. When it comes to Mecklenburg County, the Hispanic/Latino community makes up 12.6 percent of the population, or 127,000+ residents. And from 2000 to 2013, Charlotte was home to the fastest-growing Hispanic population in the country with a growth rate of 168 percent, ahead of Raleigh, Atlanta and Orlando.
This year, two major festivals in Charlotte expect to draw crowds totaling some 80,000 attendees in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Looking for more? The Mint Museum’s Latin Music Concert Series will showcase sounds from throughout Latin America, from classical music to Latin jazz. The first of four shows in the series will take place this Thursday, September 17 and features artists Aris Quiroga, Tanja Bechtler, Pavelid Castaneda and William Johnson Garcia. Tickets are $20 for non-members.
