Hobo’s Fort Mill
When I reference Fort Mill people usually assume I’m talking about Baxter Village, a 1,000-acre mixed-use development right off I-77 on the west side of the city. That’s because it’s full of stuff to do. There’s a rooftop bar at Six Pence, a wine bar, a sushi place and a pizza joint among other options. But if you head east toward Fort Mill’s proper historic downtown Main Street drag, dining options become pretty scarce.
Thankfully, things are changing. Three years ago, Local Dish breathed locally-sourced life into a block that up until then had been held exclusively by Hardee’s. And earlier this year, Hobo’s opened up on the corner adding a popular new burger joint to the mix.

Hobo’s is a casual, family-friendly restaurant and bar specializing in burgers and shakes. They have 10 specialty house burgers (including two meat-free options) as well as an extensive build-your-own offering with premium toppings like buttermilk-fried bacon. There’s even a burger, the T Money, served between two grilled cheese sandwiches instead of a bun. Hello.

I had missed lunch the day we went so an appetizer of tater tots was a must. This worked out well since Hobo’s hefty homemade, cheese-stuffed tots eat more like a full appetizer than a side.
If it were me, I’d cut them down to bite-size regulation tot dimensions, but they were good and kind of tasted like deep-fried cheesy mashed potatoes.
For dinner, I went with the black bean burger and fries and give it points for size (huge), flavor (spicy) and texture (firm but moist and not a crumbly mess).
Hobo’s has a huge patio overlooking a fenced-in grassy area that serves as unofficial free childcare and there were a bunch of kids running around.
Service was painfully slow on the patio for our group of six adults and one toddler, but it’s possible extreme hunger just warped my sense of time. Either way, I’d definitely go back to Hobo’s again, but next time I’m getting my bean burger inside a grilled cheese sandwich.
