As my kids headed back to school last month and were scrambling for last-minute haircuts, I was reminiscing with my stylist friends about the celebrity hair aspirations of my 80’s youth.
I had them in tears with my failed attempts to look like Dorothy Hamill, Princess Diana and Farrah Fawcett. Never did it occur to me that even if my hair looked similar, I would never resemble an Olympic figure skater, royalty or one of Charlie’s Angels. And, not once did my German stylist, Horst, discourage me from my hairdo dreams.

Evidently, I was not alone. A quick survey of my girlfriends found everyone has wanted the “Jennifer Aniston” at some point. I skipped that one due to length restrictions but named my daughter Phoebe so feel like I still managed a “Friends” tribute.
Fast forward to 2015 and the dream of looking like someone else is still alive but people have upped their game from wedges, feathers and wings to slicked backs, side parts and the occasional pompadour.
According to Poza Salon co-owner Zahava, one hot trend is the request for a Ruby Rose style, by both women and men. Her role in Orange is the New Black has sparked attention to her edgy look which is a bit masculine.
With Ruby Rose at the top, Poza stylists say other celebs rounding out the current Top 5 Hairdo Wish List in Charlotte include:
2) Taylor Swift, who first chopped off her long hair, then gave her timeless bob a strong side part with bangs.

3) Jake Gyllenhaal’s all-American look, great for the hipster crowd or modern man.
4) Janelle Monae brings versatility to natural hair styles, from pompadours to enhanced natural curls.
5) David Beckham’s style can be worn by athletes and dads alike. His Sprint commercials have made him a man of the people.
And, with the advent of Pinterest, Zahava says clients are pulling up pictures of real people on their phones, asking “Can you do this ‘do?”
“We work with each client to understand what they like about certain styles and quickly manage their expectations about if it’s the right look for them,” Zahava said. “It’s best to let your stylist drive as they will know what’s best for you and your features.”
After 40 years with my signature bob, I am taking that advice and letting Poza’s other owner, Pooran, a natural beauty from Iran, take me on the journey of growing my hair longer. A year into the project and we’re just at the shoulder leaving me with a look I told her makes me feel like the Lion King. She said the growing pains will be well worth it. (She went on to tell me I’ve had the wrong hairdo my whole life.)
So, what’s my mane goal? While I am tempted to say to look like my other Friend, Cougar Town star Courteney Cox, I suspect there will be some challenges there, too. So instead, now that I’m in my mid-40s and more comfortable in my own skin, I think it’s time to just aspire to the best possible version of me.
