Matt-Steele-Goodyear-Artist-in-Residence
With the end of summer comes a reinvigorated arts scene. Here are the top 10 places you are sure to find the HappeningsCLT team this month:
(1) Skyline Artist Showcase – Friday, September 4

The second Artist Showcase at Skyline features Robert Childers (painting & mixed media), Matthew Steele (sculpture) and XOXO_Ensemble Performance (theater).
The studios will be open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with XOXO performance loops throughout the night.
Skyline is a short-term artist residency project providing time, space, stipends and a showcase for three Charlotte artists or groups of artists each month. The residency program began in July and will conclude through September (highlighted in the October showcase). The project is co-presented by The Wall Poems of Charlotte and Amy Herman in collaboration with Crescent Communities.
(2) Liz Nielsen: Night Garden – Wednesday, September 9

SOCO Gallery, 421 Providence Road
We are looking forward to the second exhibition at the newest gallery in town, SOCO. Liz Nielsen: Night Garden features beautiful, jewel-colored photograms – unique works that teeter between abstraction and representation.
The reception will take place on September 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through October 31.
(3) Susan Grossman at Jerald Melberg Gallery – Saturday, September 12
Hearing from artists directly is a great way to learn more their work. Stop by the Jerald Melberg Gallery to hear from Susan Grossman on September 12 at 11 a.m.

(4) Regina Jose Galindo: Bearing Witness – Thursday, September 17
Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College, Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Art Center, 315 N. Main Street, Davidson

This exhibition, featuring Guatemalan artist Regina Jose Galindo, is sure to intrigue. An internationally acclaimed visual artist specializing in performance art, Galindo is known for pushing her body to the limit to create powerful public works that challenge the inequalities and atrocities that have become commonplace across the globe. The exhibition will feature 24 works spanning 15 years, including a new live performance during the reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
(5-8) Gallery hopping – Friday, September 18
Tonight will be a day/night of gallery hopping for the HappeningsCLT team. We’ll hit Sam Francis: Rapid Fluid Indivisible Vision, at the Bechtler sometime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The latest show, organized by their new curator Jen Edwards (have we mentioned that we love her?), highlights the prolific abstract expressionist through works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and lithography.

In the evening, we’ll head to The Dwelling III – a series of art exhibitions in unique venues from homes to small businesses. The exhibition on September 18 will feature Matt Horick and Tom Thoune, and will take place at The Spoke Easy.
We’re also looking forward to seeing the latest exhibition at the Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte’s City Center Gallery. Amalgamation, featuring mixed media work by Albert Chong includes 30 photographic works by the artist, spanning three decades.

Last stop before 9 p.m. will be Anne Lemanski’s exhibition, Simulacra, at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation. The exhibition reception will take place during the McColl’s Center’s upcoming Open House event on September 18 and will include a conversation between the artist and the exhibition curator, Mark Leach at 6:30 p.m.
(9) Man + Land + Water – Friday, September 25
Man + Land + Water at Winthrop University Galleries features a number of artists working in diverse media exploring global water issues. The reception will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Rutledge Galleries. There will also be another new exhibition in the Patrick Galleries opening that evening. LAST FISH ON EARTH: Our Happy Re-Granulated Future features works by Jarod Charzewski and Colleen Ludwig.
(10) Ashley Lathe exhibit @809 – Wednesday, September 30
Join the HappeningsCLT team on Wednesday, September 30 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. for a reception for Ashley Lathe’s current exhibition at @809, a co-working space located at 809 West Hill Street. Don’t forget, Ashley’s beautiful works on paper are also for sale!
