Discovery Place IMAX Charlotte
Aside from most recently, I can’t remember the last time I went to an IMAX movie. In fact, I think I’ve only been once in my life and have only a vague recollection of it being about a volcano so it was probably a really long time ago. I have an aversion to movies because 2+ hours is more time than I’m willing to commit to sitting in the dark with strangers watching something I may or may not end up hating.
I learned last week, though, that the IMAX theatre at Discovery Place is my ideal movie-watching venue because selections are short, educational and shown at early kid- and old people-friendly viewing times. (I am a 72-year-old retiree in a 30-year-old body.)
Last week my boyfriend and I found ourselves in the usual depression that follows the abrupt end of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week so we decided to get our oceanic fix with a viewing of Great White Shark.

We went to the 4pm show on a Friday night (er, afternoon) because that’s the latest time they had and we came to party.

Tickets are $10 for non-member adults and at least one other woman in line was as excited to pay that to see sharks as we were. (I was actually just taking a picture of the sign and noticed after the fact that this woman was enthusiastically dancing her way into the theatre. High five for that.)

In true Discovery Place style, we were here to learn. The documentary examined the “misrepresented, maligned and misunderstood” great white shark with a focus on understanding and conservation rather than sensationalism and fear. I won’t ruin it for you if you want to see it, but it definitely involves cage-free human interaction with white sharks in the wild. Really cool.
The movie is only about 45 minutes long so we successfully did something, learned something and still had our entire Friday night ahead. That’s my kind of movie date.
