Neighborhood Theatre’s new mural is to be an acknowledgement of the past and a nod to present.

His new mural project on the top of Neighborhood Theatre is sure to be a feature for the NoDa community.

“I wanted to do something abstract to symbolically represent this charging force that is coming through our community. Even though we are evolving we are still keeping the past in the present.”  – Will Puckett

Actively painting for two weeks, with 2-3 weeks left to go, the mural will be a design of animals that have been represented throughout time in different cultures. You will see a stencil overlay that will be added to the design to add texture and depth. Influences from MC Escher will also be represented in the final piece.

There will soon be a live feed of the mural going up for your viewing pleasure. A camera is already set up at Smelly Cat and capturing images that will soon be available on his webpage (Update: we’re live).

Murals are hot right now in Charlotte.

They seem to be popping up on walls everywhere. Puckett presented over 20 different ideas to Neighborhood Theatre until everyone agreed on a design.

Cost wise, Puckett tends to give an overall price that works out to be around $30-$40 per hour plus materials and design fees. However, he is very capable of working within budgets. So if you need a nice mural on the front of your house – and you are working with a budget – Puckett is your guy!

Or any number of other installations likes the floor in the Atrium at Amelie’s on N. Davidson, Cordelia Park, 15th Street, or PBR murals like those in Blind Pig or the soon to be open Abari.

Puckett has always been an artist. He has been working professionally for 10 years. He studied Studio Art his first trip through college and recently graduated from UNCC with a degree in Art History. (Were you at the neighborhood party for his graduation? I love NoDa!).

Puckett cites his influences as Roland Barthes, Michelle Foucault, and Gilles Deleuze. But don’t go looking for their artwork – they are philosophers and literary critics. “Roland Barthes had a lot to do with this (Neighborhood Theatre) piece,” Puckett said. “This piece is a departure from most of my major works. It’s a testament to my Art History degree.”
