This is part of an ongoing series titled How I Work, a look into how Charlotte gets things done at work. David Oakley is the Creative Director at BooneOakley.

I recently read Dave’s book “Why is Your Name Upside Down?: Stories from a Life in Advertising” in 36 hours. I laughed out loud during his hungover golf story at UNC for an intramural shirt and I couldn’t stop consuming the play-by-play from his Bush-Gore billboard. Buy it and tell him you did (@oakleydavid). What do I know about Dave? Enjoys Bud heavy. Overrated in ping pong. Eats Bojangles’ often. Hosts agency Christmas parties at his house that get aggressive. And, he’s arguably the top creative leader in Charlotte.

Here’s how Dave works.

Office location:

1445 South Mint in the heart of The Gold District

Job:

Creative Director at BooneOakley

Commute:

2005 Acura TL 6-speed manual. 6.5 miles.

NC-license-plate

My license plate is S733H — when it’s flipped upside down it spells HEELS. I’m sensing an upside down theme here. Go UNC. I went there and now both of my kids do.

Yes. Eroch’s playlist.

Read Axios Charlotte before I drink my first cup of coffee. Love Twitter, Instagram and kind of like Facebook…sometimes.

Stolen Ritz Carlton pen (blue ink) and a college lined notebook (paper). Old school.

Bullshitting.

Where do you go around Charlotte to get away from the office?

The Wine Shop on Fairview.

What did you eat for breakfast this morning?

vegas

Coffee.

What’s the last book you read and why?

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. I reread this book at least once a year. Sedaris is an amazing story teller. Buy this book.

If you weren’t doing your current job, what would you be doing?

I would be in Las Vegas playing cards every night and writing about it every day. Book 2 will have more of a Vegas theme.
