Wooden Robot is the brainchild of Dan Wade and Josh Patton who have been friends since middle school. Dan is a seasoned brewmaster with a Master of Science in brewing and distilling from Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University and Josh is a former banker who officially left the corporate world three weeks ago to robot full time. The combination of business and beer smarts makes them a pretty powerful duo entering the scene. They plan to start test brewing batches in the brewery in the next week or so. (Perhaps you’ll see Ted hovering around for a sample?)

Though competition is getting fierce in the Charlotte beer scene, the guys don’t seem to be bothered by it. In fact, they share a parking lot with The Brass Tap, a 33-location franchise with its first Charlotte spot currently under construction in the old Dharma Lounge next door. “We love it,” said Josh of Brass Tap’s proximity. “We support anything that elevates this neighborhood and we think it’ll drive foot traffic.”

Not to mention, Wooden Robot won’t serve food so Brass Tap’s full kitchen will be a strong draw for drunk snacks.

Wooden Robot will look and feel a little different than some of our other breweries. Although they’ll have four classic communal beer hall tables, they’ll also set up a lounge area with couches and coffee tables. “We’re not trying to be a coffee shop,” said Josh, “but if people want to sit down with their laptops and work and have a few beers we’re cool with it.”
[Writer’s note: I think you should try to be a coffee shop. Beer + coffee = win.]
The brewery is built to scale (to an extent). Josh expects they’ll start at a production rate of 1,000 kegs in the first year but the space can accommodate the equipment necessary to get them to 5,000 based on demand. I guess after that it’ll be on to a bigger location, but we’ll let them open their doors first.
