In our effort to promote and invigorate Charlotte’s art community, we have curated our second exhibition at one of our city’s most energized shared work spaces: @809 (of the #WeLoveCLT lecture series fame). Last Thursday we opened an exhibition of prints and drawings by Anna Kenar, a talented Charlottean who makes unforgettable images.
Anna grew up in Poland but moved to the United States as a teenager. She has a MFA in printmaking from Northern Illinois University and works now in Charlotte as an art teacher at CPCC while continuing to make work.
The three words we’d use to describe Anna’s work are: intricate, entrancing, and moody. Black, gray, and white artworks depict what could be masses of swirling mists, tangling roots, or muscle tissue. They are abstract but heavy and powerful to look at.

In Anna’s words:
The ideas present in my work tend to gravitate towards the cultural and historical fundamentals of my upbringing, constructing an aesthetic that references tradition and history. The central concept guiding my investigation, however, revolves around the themes relating to the human condition. I am interested in constructing environments that illustrate the ideas of conflict, alienation, power and control. I use historical and cultural references, along with abstracted body-related forms to visually investigate a realm of personal struggles, and allow the viewer for a careful and intimate examination and reflection.
