3 Important Things
Under a newly proposed sales tax redistribution plan, Mecklenburg County would incur severe cuts in revenue – maybe even up to $35 million. The bill, which was introduced in the Senate last month, has been hotly contested and will likely come up for a vote in that chamber this week. If implemented, it’s predicted that Mecklenburg County revenue streams would plummet to worse than recession-era levels.
(Update 9:56 am: we heard via a twitter DM from a legislator who told us this bill probably won’t be considered this week).
Mecklenburg County Courts have been part of a pilot program using a tool called the “PSA-Court”. The PSA-Court was developed to provide an objective assessment of risk factors when deciding what to do with defendants pretrial (e.g., bail, unsecured release, etc.). The benefit? When you take out some of the guess work, and instead look at hard data, things get a bit more fair.
Crossover deadline = more beer ?
The “crossover deadline” is the last day in the General Assembly for a bill to pass out of the chamber it was introduced in and move forward for consideration in the opposite chamber. Right now our NC Reps and Senators are in a rush to make bills pass in order to meet the deadline which is April 30, 2015. HB 278 is one of these bills – slated for a vote on Thursday. It would increase the number of barrels of beer a small brewery can make from 25,000 to 100,000 before having to hire a wholesale distributor. In a tweet on Friday, NoDa Brewing very politely requested that you call legislators in support (Agenda Briefing on the issue).
