They say it’s better to give than to receive. It’s especially good to give when the gift benefits you directly. This year, for my fiancés birthday, I gave him a gift certificate for a cooking class at Whole Foods’ Salud! Cooking School. Giving my future husband the gift of learning to cook me dinner…don’t mind if I do.

We showed up at the Whole Foods on Fairview Road and took the elevator to the third floor. When we walked through the doors to Salud!, we were immediately greeted by our friendly instructor, Chef Michael. He showed us to the appetizers – crusty bread, roasted red pepper tapenade, fresh mozzarella, and olives – and welcomed us to sit as the table and get to know our fellow classmates. The volunteers poured us a glass of wine while we chatted and waited for the rest of the participants to arrive.

When everyone was ready, Chef Michael walked us through the menu for the evening. On the agenda: spinach and roasted red pepper fettuccini, marinara, alfredo sauce, butternut squash ravioli with a sage brown butter sauce, Italian sausage, and tiramisu. Yes, lawd.

Chef Michael then divided the class up into groups of two or three and we took turns working on different menu items. Not only did he walk through big picture, more complicated items, he also broke down the basics for us. It wasn’t just, “This is how to make pasta from scratch.” It was also, “Here’s the most effective way to cut an onion.” My onion cutting will truly never be the same.
At the end of the class, we all refilled our wine glasses and filled our plates with our creations from the evening. It. Was. Amazing. I’ve been dreaming about the butternut squash pasta ever since, and the tiramisu converted me into an Italian dessert lover. I can’t wait to take another class ASAP.
Salud! Cooking School offers classes of all sorts geared toward a wide variety of participants. Seasoned chef looking to sharpen your skills? There’s a class for that. Single lady ready to mingle with some eligible bachelors? There’s a class for that, too. Stay at home mom hoping to get your kids involved in the kitchen? There’s even a class for that. If the typical $60 price tag isn’t exactly in your wheelhouse, check out Salud’s volunteer program. Volunteers help out during classes, working to keep the kitchen clean and getting the chefs whatever supplies they need. For every class worked, volunteers get a few points. After you accumulate a certain number of points, you get to take a class for free!
