Eggs-cellent news for Boulder ospreys

The latest: The first was laid April 16, the second came April 19, the third on April 21 and the fourth on April 24.

Flashback In a bit of baby-daddy drama, a younger "inexperienced" male moved into the nest this season, according to the Boulder County site moderator. The previous male has not yet been seen this year.

Caveat: This is not unheard of, considering the last male was the new guy himself just a few years ago.

• Guess it's even hard for osprey females to find a keeper.

The intrigue: The new male has a lot to learn, from how to help build a nest to hunting for food to feed any future chicks. Thankfully, the female is an experienced mom who last year successfully raised three chicks.

What's next: Boulder County camera site moderator Jasmine Finks said eggs are typically incubated 37-42 days, adding the first egg could hatch as soon as May 22.

• Yes, but: The more likely timeframe is the final week of May due to "delayed incubation."

How it works: Delayed incubation is when the female osprey lets the first one or two eggs cool to delay the embryo's growth. Finks said ospreys do this to keep the chicks closer in age, which gives the younger hatchlings a better chance at survival.

• She noted that once all the eggs are laid, the mother and her new boo incubate around the clock.
