Vice President Kamala Harris tosses the coin at Howard University-Hampton University football game at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18. Photo: Olivier Douliery/AFP via Getty Images

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday made a surprise visit to Audi Field, where she led the coin toss between Howard University and Hampton University for the inaugural "Truth and Service Classic" football game.

The big picture: Harris is the first graduate of a historically Black college or university (HBCU) to enter the White House, Axios' Russell Contreras reports.

  • The 96th matchup between Howard and Hampton marks the first-ever college football game to be played at Audi Field, home of MLS team D.C. United.
  • Second gentleman Doug Emhoff also made a visit to the Washington Nationals game on Saturday afternoon, delivering a strike with his ceremonial first pitch.

Howard University students protest campus safety and facilities

Howard University freshmen move in at the start of the 2021-22 school year. Photo: Paige Hopkins/Axios

Howard University students are staging a sit-in to demand school officials address safety concerns and give students representation on the board of trustees, Paige writes.

  • Students at the prestigious HBCU are reporting black mold, water leaks, bugs and rodents in university facilities, all while the price of tuition increases.

Why it matters: This is the second large student protest of its kind in the last few years at Howard. Students and alumni say the university still isn’t putting students first.

Focus group: Child tax credit expansion divides swing voters

Some swing voters say the most important elements to preserve in Democrats' massive social spending package are the ones that would lower prescription drug costs, reduce pollution and make childcare or pre-K free or more affordable.

Yes, but: Considerably less popular among Trump-to-Biden voters: Extending the expanded child tax credit to 2025.

GOP senator calls for senility test for aging leaders

Photo: "Axios on HBO"

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), a physician, told me during an "Axios on HBO" interview that he favors cognition tests for aging leaders of all three branches of government.

Why it matters: Wisdom comes with age. But science also shows that we lose something. And much of the world is now run by old people — including President Biden, 78 ... Speaker Pelosi, 81 ...  Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, 70 ... and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 79.
