Guantanamo Bay detention center's top commander was fired "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command," the Defense Department said in a statement Sunday.

Details: U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Ring was fired after an investigation that began in March, Southern Command spokesperson Col. Amanda Azubuike said. “The vast majority of commanders complete their assigned tours with distinction. When they fall short, we hold our leaders accountable," she said in a statement to NBC, without giving further details. U.S. Army Brig. Gen. John Hussey will take over as acting commander.
