Google announced Thursday it plans to open its first physical retail store in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood.

Why it matters, via Axios' Ina Fried: Google's move into brick-and-mortar sales comes after the company broadened its hardware with Fitbit, Nest and Pixel. But most major tech companies outside Apple have struggled with physical stores, including Samsung and Sony.

Our thought bubble: It’s one thing to have enough products to fill store shelves. It’s another to have enough fans to generate necessary foot traffic.

What they're saying: Google said its Chelsea store will be part of its urban campus, with employees available for troubleshooting, fixing cracked Pixel screens and installing products.

  • Face masks and social distancing will be required in-store for the foreseeable future.

Samsung folds new device shapes into its fall launch

Samsung has introduced two new foldable phones as well as a major overhaul of its watch lineup at an online event Wednesday.

The big picture: Samsung may seem to be shaking things up this year by skipping a new Galaxy Note and using its fall event to launch new foldable phones. But it's actually returning to the early days of the Note, when its mainstream smartphone would launch early in the year and more experimental devices would roll out in the fall.

Birx: Trump White House could have reduced COVID deaths by 30 to 40%

Deborah Birx, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator under former President Trump, told a House subcommittee earlier this month that the Trump administration could have prevented tens of thousands of deaths during the early stages of the pandemic.

Driving the news: "I believe if we had fully implemented the mask mandates, the reduction in indoor dining ... and we had increased testing, that we probably could have decreased fatalities into the 30% less to 40% less range," Birx said in a closed-door testimony to the Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, according to excerpts provided by the panel.

Study: Fear of debt keeps Latinos out of college

Fear of never being able to pay off school loans is keeping many young Latinos in the U.S. from going to college or completing a degree, according to a report published in September.

State of play: Latinos tend to have more difficulty repaying school debt than white student borrowers, according to Federal Reserve data, at the same time that they need more loans in order to afford tuition.
