The city of Fresno, California has reached its second multi-million dollar settlement related to fatal police shootings in less than a month, ABC News reports.

The big picture: Saturday's $4.9 million settlement goes to the family of Isiah Murrietta-Golding, an unarmed 16-year-old who was shot in the back of the head by a police officer in 2017, per The Fresno Bee.

  • In early April, the city of Fresno agreed to pay a $4.4 million settlement to the family of 45-year-old Casimero “Shane” Casillas, who was shot by police in 2015.

What they're saying: “These are two very difficult cases that the council wants to bring closure to the families that acknowledges loss and allows the city to pursue other settlements,” Councilmember Miguel Arias told the Bee.

  • “I want to sincerely express our apologies and sympathies to the families. It’s my hope that the settlements allow the families to move forward.”

What's next: Arias added that city officials are looking to implement roughly two dozen police reform recommendations.

At least six police killings took place in the 24 hours after a verdict was reached in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, AP reports.

Why it matters: As many nationwide breathed a collective sigh of relief after a jury on Tuesday found Chauvin guilty in the murder of George Floyd, some of the six deaths prompted renewed calls for justice and an end to police violence.

Biden's ambassador nominee: "China is not an Olympian power"

President Biden's nominee to serve as ambassador to China delivered a stark assessment of the challenges the U.S. faces in confronting Beijing, but stressed that the rising superpower is "not all-powerful" and the West retains "substantial" advantages.

The big picture: Nicholas Burns, a retired career diplomat and former U.S. ambassador to NATO, used his confirmation hearing Wednesday to echo the growing bipartisan consensus that China poses "the greatest threat to the security of our country and the democratic world" in the 21st century.

Scoop: U.S. and Israel to form team to solve consulate dispute

The U.S. and Israel are planning to form a joint team to hold discreet negotiations on the reopening of the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem, Israeli officials say.

Why it matters: The consulate handled relations with the Palestinians for 25 years before being shut down by then President Donald Trump in 2019. Senior officials in Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's government see the consulate issue as a political hot potato that could destabilize their unwieldy coalition.
