Frances Haugen. Photo: Matt McClain-Pool/Getty Images

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said Monday she will meet with the social media company's Oversight Board sometime in the coming weeks. The Oversight Board said in a statement it wants to "gather information that can help push for greater transparency and accountability."

Why it matters: Last week, Haugen urged lawmakers to regulate Facebook, saying it knows its algorithms can lead teens to pro-anorexia content and that it boosts extreme content more likely to elicit a reaction from users.

The big picture: Facebook established and funded the Oversight Board in 2020 to provide an independent review of its content moderation decisions.

  • Haugen tweeted confirming that she has accepted the invitation to brief the Oversight Board, adding "Facebook has lied to the board repeatedly, and I am looking forward to sharing the truth with them."

Of note: Haugen's busy schedule this month will include appearing before the U.K. parliament on Oct. 25 to give evidence to the joint committee considering the Online Safety Bill, legislation geared toward regulating social media companies.

  • "There needs to be greater transparency on the decisions companies like Facebook take when they trade off user safety for user engagement. We look forward to discussing these issues with Frances Haugen," Member of Parliament Damian Collins, chair of the committee, said in the press release.

Facebook is looking to introduce more news products for its News Tab in coming months, including more curated collections around big events and breaking news, its VP of global news partnerships Campbell Brown told Axios.

Why it matters: The News Tab, a separate destination for news on Facebook from publishers selected by the tech giant, has helped the company address regulatory scrutiny that it doesn't do enough to combat misinformation.

Philadelphia has received at least 212 applications so far from individuals seeking to sit on its new Citizens Police Oversight Commission, city spokesperson Kevin Lessard told Axios.

What's happening: The selection panel is considering applications for the independent, nine-member commission on a rolling basis.

  • The deadline to apply is Nov. 5, and the panel is expected to put forward its slate of candidates before the year's end, Lessard said in an email.
  • The city council has final say on who serves on the commission.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) extended a drought emergency declaration to cover the entire state on Tuesday.

Why it matters: "California is experiencing its worst drought since the late 1800s, as measured by both lack of precipitation and high temperatures," per a statement from the governor's office. This past August was the driest and hottest one on record, "and the water year that ended last month was the second driest on record," the statement added.
