Clubhouse is rolling out the ability to send payments directly to other users, partnering with digital payment company Stripe to facilitate the feature.
Why it matters: Clubhouse has touted plans to help conversation hosts generate revenue on the app amid a growing push for creators of digital and social media content be better compensated. Hosts receiving money will get to keep the entire amount for now.
Details: The company says that for now, while all users will be able to send money, only a small number will be able to receive payments while it's still testing the feature.
- Users sending money will also be charged a small card processing fee by Stripe.
Yes, but: While Clubhouse says that it's not currently taking a cut from the payments, it's unclear whether this may change in the future.
- After all, Clubhouse will eventually have to generate revenue of its own, and has said in the past that it doesn't want to rely on ads.
The big picture: Services that let content producers generate revenue directly from their fans and subscribers like Patreon, Substack, and OnlyFans have been booming in the past year.
