Chris Cuomo on Thursday night apologized to his CNN colleagues following a Washington Post report that revealed that he had advised his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, on how to handle sexual harassment accusations.

What he's saying: "I can be objective about just about any topic, but not about my family. Those of you who watch this show get it. Like you, I bet, my family means everything to me. And I am fiercely loyal to them. I am family first, job second," Cuomo said.

  • "Being a journalist and a brother to a politician is unique and a unique challenge, and I have a unique responsibility to balance those roles, it's not always easy," he continued.
  • "When my brother's situation became turbulent, being looped into calls with other friends of his and advisers that did include some of his staff, I understand why that was a problem for CNN. It will not happen again."
  • "It was a mistake because I put my colleagues here, who I believe are the best in the business, in a bad spot. I never intended for that, I would never intend for that, and I am sorry for that."
  • Cuomo added that he has never tried to influence CNN's coverage of his brother and has been "walled off" from it.

Catch up quick: After the Post revealed that Cuomo participated in strategy sessions with his brother and coached him on how to respond to the sexual harassment accusations, CNN said in a statement that it was "inappropriate" for Cuomo to "engage in conversations that included members of the Governor’s staff."

  • Cuomo will not be penalized for participating in the calls.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul acknowledged nearly 12,000 coronavirus deaths in the state that had not been reported by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration.

Why it matters: Cuomo had been criticized for his handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes early in the pandemic, and he faced allegations that his administration withheld data on coronavirus deaths in nursing homes in order to delay investigations.

WHO warns against travel bans on southern African countries

The World Health Organization called on countries Sunday to not impose travel bans on southern African nations amid concerns over the new COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Why it matters: The U.S. and countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific announced travel restrictions in response to Omicron, which was first detected in South Africa. It's since spread to several European countries, Canada, Israel, Australia and Hong Kong. The WHO noted in a statement that only two southern African nations have detected the new variant.

The first two cases of the new Omicron variant have been detected in North America, the Canadian government announced Sunday evening.

Driving the news: The World Health Organization has named Omicron a "variant of concern," but cautioned earlier on Sunday that it is not yet clear whether it's more transmissible than other strains of COVID-19.
