Chris Cuomo on Thursday night apologized to his CNN colleagues following a Washington Post report that revealed that he had advised his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, on how to handle sexual harassment accusations.

What he's saying: "I can be objective about just about any topic, but not about my family. Those of you who watch this show get it. Like you, I bet, my family means everything to me. And I am fiercely loyal to them. I am family first, job second," Cuomo said.

  • "Being a journalist and a brother to a politician is unique and a unique challenge, and I have a unique responsibility to balance those roles, it's not always easy," he continued.
  • "When my brother's situation became turbulent, being looped into calls with other friends of his and advisers that did include some of his staff, I understand why that was a problem for CNN. It will not happen again."
  • "It was a mistake because I put my colleagues here, who I believe are the best in the business, in a bad spot. I never intended for that, I would never intend for that, and I am sorry for that."
  • Cuomo added that he has never tried to influence CNN's coverage of his brother and has been "walled off" from it.

Catch up quick: After the Post revealed that Cuomo participated in strategy sessions with his brother and coached him on how to respond to the sexual harassment accusations, CNN said in a statement that it was "inappropriate" for Cuomo to "engage in conversations that included members of the Governor’s staff."

  • Cuomo will not be penalized for participating in the calls.

CNN acknowledges Chris Cuomo joined his brother's strategy calls on sexual harassment accusations

CNN acknowledged Thursday that anchor Chris Cuomo joined strategy sessions with his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in the wake of sexual harassment accusations against him, through a statement to the Washington Post.

Why it matters: Although CNN said Cuomo has not been involved in the outlet's coverage of the allegations, the calls detailed by the Post show that the anchor advised his brother's staff on how to respond to the accusations — which "cuts against the widely accepted norm in journalism that those reporting the news should not be involved in politics," the Post writes.

What they're saying: “Chris has not been involved in CNN’s extensive coverage of the allegations against Governor Cuomo — on air or behind the scenes,” the network's statement to WashPost reads. “In part because, as he has said on his show, he could never be objective. But also because he often serves as a sounding board for his brother.”

  • “However, it was inappropriate to engage in conversations that included members of the Governor’s staff, which Chris acknowledges,” the statement added. “He will not participate in such conversations going forward.”
  • CNN said the anchor will not be penalized.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday that anyone who gets vaccinated in one of the 10 state vaccination sites next week will receive a free lottery scratch ticket for the chance to win a grand prize of $5 million.

Why it matters: Cuomo said New York has inoculated approximately 43% of its population, but that vaccination numbers are "slowing dramatically."

Trump DOJ secretly obtained CNN reporter's email and phone records

The Trump administration "secretly sought and obtained" the phone and email records of CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr, CNN reported Thursday.

Why it matters: The disclosure comes less than two weeks after it was revealed that former President Trump's Justice Department obtained phone records of three Washington Post reporters in 2017.
