Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, political chief of Afghanistan's Taliban, in Tianjin in July. Photo: Li Ran/Xinhua via Getty Images

China will "respect the wishes and choices of the Afghan people" after the Taliban seized Kabul and toppled Afghanistan's U.S.-backed government, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said Monday, according to the Financial Times.

Why it matters: Beijing’s first official comments since the Taliban installed themselves in the presidential palace in Kabul signifies a willingness to work with a Taliban-led government in Afghanistan.

What they're saying: "The situation in Afghanistan has already undergone a major transformation and we respect the wishes and choices of the Afghan people,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.

Between the lines: Any cooperation between China and the Taliban will likely be determined by the Taliban's approach to Xinjiang province, in which Beijing has interned more than 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, the Times notes.

  • During meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last month, senior Taliban officials promised Afghanistan would not be used to harbor terrorists to attack Chinese in Xinjiang, according to the Times.

The leader of the European Parliament's first official delegation to Taiwan says the EU is slowly waking up to the threat posed by the Chinese government — but is held back by companies, particularly in Germany, that act as "lobbyists" for Beijing.

Driving the news: Raphaël Glucksmann, a French human rights activist who has quickly become one of Europe's most influential voices on China, told Axios in a wide-ranging interview that he is seeking to "break the taboo inside the European institutions" on engaging with Taiwan.

First look: Targeting foreign cash behind congressional testimony

New legislation would force policy experts who testify before Congress to disclose any foreign government funding for nonprofits employing them, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Existing rules provide a measure of disclosure, but Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) says loopholes have allowed congressional witnesses to routinely sidestep the requirements, potentially obscuring foreign funding behind expert testimony used to shape U.S. law. The law could affect numerous experts from think tanks.

Pelosi announces bid for reelection ahead of 2022 midterms

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced her bid for reelection Tuesday, amid a deluge of other safe-seat Democrats announcing their retirements.

Why it matters: Pelosi’s announcement follows months of speculation — despite her denials — that she was preparing to leave Congress.
